  30.    New to this list is a couple of government services: The Library
  31. of Congress database and the Presidential email addresses. Get
  32. involved.
  33.    Also, whatever you do, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HACK ANYTHING ON
  34. THE INTERNET! The hacking that has been done on the Internet has caused
  35. a great many BBSs and other sites to go down forever, and others have
  36. taken steps at making this net a little less friendly than it is now.
  37. (e.g., Nyx.) These BBSs do not have to be here. However, they still exist 
  38. and literally thousands use them each day. Don't hack them, or what we now
  39. have will be history. Well, that said, on with the show...

  166. flavor to the stock Citadel code, so none of them are quite the same.

  437. I've had so many users ask me if I make a list of FTP sites that I've
  438. decided to make a list of FTP sites. Service with a smiley face. :)
  439. However, I'm not going to list FTP sites by platform. It'd be too large,
  440. and I'd be stepping on the toes of others who make lists of FTP sites.
  441. I'm limiting my list to sites that have important text files, such as
  442. Project Gutenberg or the Online Book Initiative (see world.std.com.),
  443. and a site that has sound files, something very important to me since
  444. I just bought a sound card. :)
  445. For those of you who don't know how to FTP:
  446. The command is like this:
  447. To FTP Project Gutenberg...
  448. ftp mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu
  449. Once you are prompted for a login, do this:
  450. On a UNIX, type anonymous.
  451. On a VAX, type login anonymous.
  452. Your password is your email address. It's a courtesy to the FTP server
  453. to do this. Get used to it or make a macro.
  454. List the contents of directories by hitting 'ls' or 'dir'.
  455. If you use 'dir', you can tell which are directories by looking at the
  456. far left. If the first letter at the far left is a d, it's a directory.
  457. Otherwise, it's a file.
  458. Change directories by hitting 'cd directoryname', where
  459. directoryname is the name of the directory.
  460. To get a non-text file (.ZIP, .Z, .sea, .LHA, .tar...), type bin before
  461. the next step.
  462. To get a file from the server to your account, type get filename.
  463. Sometimes it takes a while. That's life.
  464. Getting it from your account to your computer is someone else's problem.

  578.          Latest info #2:
  579.          Rumor has it that Prodigy's problem is its interface: INet mail 
  580.          is 80 columns wide; Prodigy's is only 40. Simple math'll tell 
  581.          you it ain't gonna fit.
  582.          Solution: Somewhere over the rainbow, there'll be an 80-column
  583.          version.
  584.          Damn, you'd think Prodigy would pay me for doling out all this
  585.          info...
